This Packraft adventure begins with boarding a six-passenger floatplane and taking off from the water. The scenic flight will head towards the mouth of the Taku Inlet, a gateway to flowing glaciers of the Juneau icefield. Keep an eye out for mountain goats, black bears and moose along the way. After landing on the Norris Glacier fed lake, hike over the glacially carved terrain to a cove where your packraft awaits. From here, you will be outfitted in single person packrafts and introduced paddling techniques by your guides. Once you launch your packraft, your paddle to the glacier will take you past icebergs, all while taking in the stunning mountain and glacier landscapes around you.

As you approach the glacier, prepare to beach your boat right on the Norris Glacier, your guide will assist you in getting out of your packraft and into micro-spikes. Explore the moonscape-like area of the glacier all by foot and get panoramic views of Norris and Taku glaciers. Look for crevasses, glacier pools, moulins, and other incredible ice features. Glacier features come and go throughout the season, just like the ebb and flow of our glaciers. Upon completion of your glacier hike, slide back into your packraft and paddle back to shore. Upon arrival at the seaside base on Douglas Island, you will be outfitted with glacier overboots and a floatation device. Professional staff will provide a thorough safety briefing before helping you load into an A-Star helicopters.

Your pilot will choose one of many scenic routes to fly you to Dog World, providing stunning views of the Tongass National Forest and Juneau Icefield along the way on your very own Juneau helicopter tour. You might even get lucky enough to spot wildlife or a calving glacier!

Upon landing at Dog World, you will be greeted by your guide, a professional musher with years of experience dog sledding in Alaska.

The guides are eager to share their lifestyle and teach you the basics of dogsled handling and dog commands, along with leading you on an exciting mush for up to two miles.

With access to a wide array of accessible streams, your guides are able to select the best location suited to your particular group -one that offers the best fishing opportunities available on any given day. Streams in Southeast Alaska tend to be small and relatively short but allow ample room for fly-casting.  Efforts are focused in estuaries and the deeper holes and runs in the first two miles of the stream corridor.

Other groups are rarely, if ever, encountered.

Southeast Alaska is blessed with abundant runs of Wild Pacific Salmon, fast-action for Dolly Varden (char), Cutthroat Trout and trophy-sized Steelhead. Fishing opportunities for these species are dictated by run timing, which tends to be fairly consistent from year to year.

Your bear viewing trip will give you the chance to view and photograph a variety of wildlife in their natural settings. Eagles, other birds and harbor seals are commonly sighted on these trips. Brown and black bears are seen frequently, and we occasionally see, Sitka black-tailed deer, and otters as well.

All of the locations you go bear viewing are located in true wilderness. You will often see eagles, bears, deer and whales while exploring their backyard. Many guests enjoy the setting as much as the bear viewing itself!

Your guide will share his/her knowledge of brown bears, and the wildlife and fascinating natural history of the area. This Alaskan adventure tour is a combination of a helicopter flight seeing tour, a river boat tour close to the face of the glacier, and a glacier walkabout. The tour begins when your van driver shuttles you from your ship’s pier, through the city of Juneau, to the helicopter base on Douglas Island. At the helicopter base, you’ll be given a pre-flight safety briefing, be fitted with rain pants and ice boots that fit over your shoes.

Aboard the helicopter, you’ll fly high above Juneau, the Tongass National forest, the Juneau Glaciers, Gastineau Channel, and Taku River. The flight to Taku Point is approximately 15 minutes long. The helicopter lands on a deck on the bank of the Taku River, at Taku Point. You will be greeted at Taku Point where you’ll be given flotation jackets, hearing protection, an airboat safety briefing, as well as plenty of interesting local history. You’ll have a chance to take pictures of the pristine Taku River basin, and the Taku Glacier spread before you.

There are 2 flights of stairs that you’ll descend, and board the waiting airboat. You’ll sit comfortably aboard the covered airboat, with open sides for the best possible views and photo opportunities. The airboat captain will help you board, and shortly your adventure will continue by water. On the river, you’ll cruise the 5-mile terminus of the only advancing glacier of the Juneau Ice Field. You’ll come within arm’s reach of the ice, and you’ll understand the immense size of this glacier as you stare up at it from the river. The Airboat captain will stop the boat in various locations for photos, and to talk about the glacier and the river basin that it has carved over the years.

Back at Taku Point, you’ll leave the airboat to rejoin the helicopter that will take you up, up, up to the top of the Taku Glacier. Step out of the helicopter and set foot on the amazing 4500’ thick ice for a 10-minute glacier landing. You’ll have time for more photos, and your pilot will give you details about the ice field, and facts specific to the Taku Glacier. The helicopter will return you to the Heli Base, and the van will return you to your pier.

The one hour “Glacier Walkabout” is a non-strenuous interpretive walk. Our guides provide detailed explanations of the glacier environment, the surrounding area, and teach proper use of the mountaineering equipment provided. The amount of walking is moderate, over relatively flat to rolling terrain with abundant photo opportunities.

On the 2-hour “Glacier Trek”, there is an early emphasis on learning the proper use of the mountaineering gear and understanding the glacier features and hazards so that more remote areas of the glacier can be accessed during the trek.

You will experience physical activity interspersed with detailed explanations of the glacier environment and surrounding area. Participants should be comfortable hiking approximately two miles over uneven and sometimes steep terrain. No previous experience is necessary but bring your camera and an appetite for adventure.

The Ice Climbing Tour consists of 1 hour of hiking and 1 hour of climbing over the rugged terrain of the glacier. Upon landing, your guide teaches the basics of glacier travel and then leads your group on an exploration of the most pristine and remote areas of the glacier.

Opportunities for adventure photos abound as you are introduced to and practice basic climbing and rope techniques enabling you to safely climb and descend ice walls.

The amount of walking is extensive and often on steep terrain with some technical climbing. No experience is necessary, however you should be in good physical condition and have an open mind for adventure.
